Well, I’m in the airport headed back to Dallas after my fantastic weekend here in New Orleans. Love this place—can’t wait to come back again!
I definitely ate so much better this weekend than I thought was going to happen. I even packed a ton of Clif bars in preparation for having nothing to eat. But all weekend long I was able to find places to eat—either those that directly catered to vegans, or had items that could be made vegan friendly.
My second favorite experience of the weekend was when I went to brunch in a big group. I never want to be that guy that says “oh I can’t eat there”, so I just accepted and assumed I could find something—and if not, there’s always something I could pick up later on my own.
When the waitress came by, my friend immediately asked: “he’s vegan, can he eat anything?”. Which always catches me off guard, because I usually like to just ask about certain items that appear vegan instead of being like: Hey I’m vegan, cater to me!
Her response was priceless: “Seriously?” She said it with a mix of minor disdain and general surprise that someone could quite possibly be vegan. But after that, she was actually really nice about it. They had a great oatmeal+fruit dish that wasn’t made with any dairy, so I ordered that.
My friend sitting next to me ordered eggs/bacon/buttered toast, and her response to him was also great. She kind of joke-whispered to him across me: “Is that going to offend him?”. I thought that was just too funny…no matter what motivated her question. It’s just funny to see people react to my dietary requirements.
Anyway, that place was the only place where it wasn’t immediately obvious what I could eat. Everywhere else near/in the French Quarter had plenty. I had this amazing bbq tofu sandwich at this one bar that was incredible. And I also found this great market vendor called Meals from the Heart that had tons of vegan options (including amazing vegan blueberry pancakes that I am still dreaming about).
Overall great experience. Can’t wait to go back!
